Monthly Quote:

This month's meeting is 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 28th.

~ Slide Night ~

From the editor's desk:

Welcome to the March Edition of the Sound Exposure Photography Club's Newsletter. As you can see, this month is Slide Night. Bring no more than two slides; bring duplicates where possible instead of your originals. Label them clearly.

~ We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming to bring you this important announcement! ~

April will be a significant month for the staff here at the SEPC Newsletter offices. It will be two years since I assumed the job of editing the newsletter and though it has been fun, it is time to allow someone or a partnership the privilege of editing the letter. This is an exciting opportunity for any club member(s) to show us their stuff!

Is it time to bring in fresh ideas, or continue the current format?

Please let me know via my email at fyrframe@centurytel.net and I will provide you with all the help, data and records you will need. Please act quickly. I will produce or help someone produce the April edition and at that time will hand over the reins to a new editor.

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.

We hope to bring the membership through these pages, a treasury of ideas, direction, artwork, offerings and support. ~

Comments:

With your permission, I would like to revisit an earlier topic. I have spent the last few weeks, as some have painfully found out (due to my excessive whining), trying in vain to print some of my black and white work. In the digital age, that is quite a task. I remember the no so long ago days of jumping into the dark room to print a black and white image with out too much difficulty. Now, I can't print one (through the digital process) to save my life.

I will bring out some new ideas I have discovered from my efforts. The first and foremost rule to remember? It's not easy, and the darkroom is of no relevance.

Remember we are a community of photographers, and support is at the very heart of our club. So do not hesitate to provide your suggestions on how to make our site, newsletter or any of our other activities better for all of our member photographers. ~

Hello all,

I now have representation through an on-line art gallery! It's a new
site and still under construction, but you're welcome to take a look. I am
the only photographer so far so my page is pretty easy to find. To view my
images, go to www.anglersartgallery.com
and then click on the Photography heading.

The parent group is www.blackwatertrading.com. The online art gallery is dedicated to representing fine art from and for the great Pacific Northwest, and market to outdoor sports enthusiasts, wildlife art aficionados and collectors.

AnglersArtGallery.com has 3 openings left for photographers to add
to the site. If you do not have on-line representation as yet, and your
artwork is primarily ANGLER, Pacific Northwest or wildlife themes, feel free
to contact Carol at info@anglersartgallery.com for more information and to apply.

Both Carol and her husband, Luke, are not only great people to work
with, but are passionate about art and artists. I highly recommend them.

Cheryl Hanna-Truscott continues looking for donations of photographs for auctions to help out various non-profit organizations in our area.

For information please contact Cheryl at 253- 851-5345 or email cheryl@cederhollowstudio.com

We have two new chairpersons for the Field Trip Department, Jack McGinnis and Jim Bickley. How about a round of applause!

SEPC Field Trip News:

The SEPC's March Field Trip will be at Hurricane Ridge on March 24th.

We will meet at the Purdy Park and Ride at 8:00 am and pick up stragglers at the Mullenix Park & Ride at 8:20 am. (http://www.kitsaptransit.org/ParkAndRides/MullenixMap.html). For those that wish to go up sooner, for a sunrise pic, we'll meet up at the Hurricane Ridge Gift Shop.

It's a little over 100 miles from there, so carpooling is highly encouraged. Bring warm clothing (hats, gloves, sunglasses) and a bag lunch.

Equipment suggestions include tripod, wide lens for vistas, telephoto for wildlife, and extra batteries due to the cold.

Editor's note: You should also consider filters, Polarizer especially and reflectors for fill light on budding new flowers.

We should arrive mid-day - parking is at the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center.

For additional information, http://www.outdoorplaces.com/Destination/secret/hurricane_ridge/

I will keep up on the weather conditions and notify everyone if there are any changes.

Editor's note: John provided several links to help everyone plan their day, but the links were broken and failed to work. I have provided the above link as an alternate option.

Also note: Melissa has offered to provide car-pooling transportation for those leaving the Auburn area. Contact Melissa zigzagmusher@earthlink.net

Equipment News:

It can be tough getting your computer to talk with your printer in accurate detail about your digital images. One solution is known as a RIP or Raster Images Processor, a software program (there are many versions available) which enables the user to create ink and paper profiles to fit each image. This can be especially helpful when trying to use color inks to print high caliber black & white images, which have been converted from color originals. RIP programs are not only complicated but also quite expensive.

Fortunately, I have found one RIP program that is much more palatable in the cost department. It is called QuadTone RIP and it is a shareware program with lots of potential. Check it out at http://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRoverview.html

Photographic Techniques, Tips and Trips:

Black and White photography is about fidelity of tone and texture. The old Dickman Mill site on Tacoma's waterfront is a great place to shoot black and white. Currently adding spice to the old decaying structures of the once profitable wood processing plant, is an old tug and "baby tender" vessel tied to a buoy just off shore.

Photoshop Techniques, Tips and Insights:

In an earlier issue, I had suggested one way to convert a color image to black and white. There are at least six other ways to accomplish that task using photoshop. First, it is recommended to always work in RGB mode. This provides the greatest amount of choices to the photographer.

Method One: RGB to Grayscale: Image > Mode > Grayscale. In grayscale mode, try turning off you colors settings in your printer, using black ink only.

Method Two: RGB to Grayscale to Duotone: Image > Mode > Duotone. In this mode, turn on your printer's color inks. Pick an additional color to use with the base black. Also try Tritone or Quadtone.

Method Three: RGB to Grayscale to RGB: Image > Mode > Grayscale > RGB. Converting your Grayscale image back to RGB gives you many more choices in working your black and white image.

Method Four: RGB to Desaturate: Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation. You may lose some color distinctions in this process.

Method Five: RGB to Channel Mixer to Monochrome: Image > Adjustments > Channel Mixer. Here you can use sliders like the old days of shooting black and white film with various filters.

Method Six: RGB to Hue/Saturation > LAB: Here you will need to delete the A and B channels in your channels pallet creating an alpha channel, and then flatten the image. Convert the image to grayscale.

In all of these processes where possible, you should first create an adjustment layer. Layer > New Adjustment Layer. And make sure "preview" is selected when available.

Well that's it for now. I hope you've enjoyed reading through your newsletter. I would like to reiterate this is your club and your newsletter. If you have any ideas to make your club a better community, please contact any of the board members.

Photography has always been and remains multifaceted; it tells us stories of life, providing insight, pleasure and pain. I am always amazed at the ease in which photography can effect emotion and connection.

It is written, that on July 4th in 1862, as a result of a controversy surrounding copyright issues during a recent art show, the French Court declared that photography be legally accepted as fine art.

I want to thank the French for their marvelous insight.

We look forward to hearing from you. ~
